St Louis Shopper – March 2011
By Frank Jones
The year was 1970 and the date was September 12th. It was my 21st birthday. My friends wanted to take me out and celebrate. One of the places we went that night was the Haven. We went there that night to get some great food and to be honest, more than a few cocktails. The haven is at 6625 Morganford at the corner of Morganford and Haven. It has been there since the late 1940’s. It was owned and operated by the Beck family for almost 60 years until Gordon Beck closed a few years back. Its reputation then is much the same as now. The Haven through its long history has always been known as a family friendly restaurant and bar, where you could get a great meal and a frosty brew. We had a wonderful time that night and it is nice to know some things never change. Here it is some 40 years later and I can still go there for the same reasons.
Its current owner, John Gasperi, holds a degree in Hotel & Restaurant management from Mizzou. He cut his teeth in the restaurant business as manager of Dulany’s for 13 years and then O’Leary’s for 2 years. A couple of years ago he decided to take the plunge and acquired the Haven. He updated the kitchen and renovated the rest of the property being careful to preserve the quaintness the Haven was known for. John was a country boy originally, but we won’t hold that against him, but now he is south city through and through having recently purchasing a home in the neighborhood. He is a gregarious man who loves to interact with his customers, especially families with kids and seniors.
One thing you will notice when you go in is how clean it is, spotless actually. The staff, many of who have been with John for 5 or more years, is attentive and good at what they do, whether they are preparing food or serving it. The food itself is quite delicious. Their steak sandwich, which is hand cut and served on garlic bread, is really something special. The chicken breast sandwich which is a full 8 ounces instead of the usual 6 ounces found in most places is really good too. But my favorite menu items would have to be their pork chop dinner and their Cod sandwich. You might also want to check out their daily specials as well.
The Haven’s prices are rather moderate, quite often less than you could pay at your favorite fast food restaurant. The haven was recently voted in the Riverfront Times as one of the “Top Five Pubs in St Louis”, and also won the People’s Choice Award at the Iron Barley’s Rib Fest for their Baby Back Ribs. By the way, the Baby Back Ribs they serve are so tender and moist they fall right off the bone. Carry-outs are available for your convenience. Why not stop by today or give them a call at 314-352-4283. The haven is open 7 days a week and has gone smoke free. Their web address is www.thehavenpub.com.
